What is Sensory Integration?

​

In typical child development, their brains are born with the ability in process, integrate and organise sensory systems, this includes hearing, vision, sense of smell, taste, touch, balance, internal body sense, and body awareness.

 

The above sensory systems contribute to speech and language development and provide an essential foundation of the skills needed for learning, for example, organisation, attention, social skills and emotional stability.

The Sensory Integration approach focuses on providing stimulation for one's sensory needs in a fun way, in order to trigger one's brains to continuously process the senses. And so, the brains can learn from experiences and promote ongoing adaptive responses. Once the child is integrating the sensory information effectively, they will find it easier to achieve success in all aspects in life.​

Sensory Integration and Autism

​

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders faces difficulties with sensory processing, and therefore they may over-reacting or under-react to certain senses such as sights, touch, etc. 

​

Sensory Integration Therapy can help reduce self-stimulating behaviour, improving body and spatial awareness, as well as facilitate motor planning.

Sensory Integration and Attention Deficits

​

​Due to the difficulties in receiving and processing sensory information, children with ADHD often face challenges in balance control, impulse control, motor planning, spatial awareness and balance control. Management of sensory processing problems with children with ADHD plays an important role in their development.
